These are the recent report summaries from our rangers.

Comments: See note above regarding signage asking people to stay on trails.

No fresh bear signs today, but had two great face to faces with elk. 2 sightings, one with large bulll and 4 cows….magnificent!!!

Work Needed: Perhaps a sign at trailhead encouraging visitors to stay on trail unless travelling cross country and bushwhacking, and avoid walk-arounds which add to erosion problems on the trail.

Otherwise, the trail and usual problem areas all are in good condition.

Work Performed: Routine trail patrol and maintenance.

Cut and removed one aspen from trail at area adjacent to large boulder field where stream has gone under the field.

Destination Area: Old Sawmill area (~5-1/2 mi)
Entry Point: Sarvis Creek TH 1105
Date Out: 10/02/2008
Date In: 10/02/2008
Patrolled By: Jim Berger

Comments: There is substantiallly more horse traffic, it appears this year, to which a lot of the walk-arounds can be attributed.

Quite a lot of fresh bear sign, scat and tracks, from 1/2 mi beyond TH to 1/2 mi beyond cabin. No elk signs until water crossing at cabin.

Left one maybe barely legal fire-ring intact in cabin area…the one we built 2 years ago was torn apart, but rocks were left close.

Work Needed: One 8-10in dead aspen across trail ~20min beyond bridge. Will return on 10/2 and cut and remove.
Work Performed: Routine Trail Patrol and maintenance. Brushed out several walk-arounds….there appear to be a substantial no. this year compared to years past. Destroyed illegal 4 fire-rings…1 just below cabin (which was recent and built on a piece of scrap iron with trash in the coals) and 3 about 1/2 mi beyond cabin, which had been there for quite awhile. Checked cabin area for trash, which turned out fairly clean. Packed out one small bag of trash.

Comments: A dangerous tree exists approximately 2 miles up Trail 1150 from Slavonia TH. This 18″ diam. lodgepole is 5′ off the trail, and broke as I walked by. Its top is slightly snagged, and I feel it will fall across the trail with the first wind of any consequence.
